Breakdown the Rose
We have all heard the poem;
Roses are Red
Violets are Blue
Sugar is sweet
And so are you
Since yesterday was Valentine’s Day, I can’t help but think about Roses. The traditional Valentine’s day flower. All the beautiful colours and varieties. Stunning! Their beauty, their aroma, and that feeling of love...
But who decided that Roses best represented Love? Let me hit you with a bit of history.... wiki style...
During late 17th century, while in Persia, King Charles II was exposed to a new art—the language of flowers. This expressionist art focused on one’s ability to communicate using flowers without uttering any words at all.
The rose took on this meaning because of its affiliation with Aphrodite, the goddess of love. In Greek mythology, it is said that rose bushes grew from the ground through Aphrodite’s tears. The Romans, who turned Aphrodite into their goddess Venus, kept the rose as her symbol of love and beauty.
Roses are written into our history, and will be in our future for years to come.
Some 50 million years ago, the first rose in the Americas were found in modern-day Colorado. Today's garden roses come from 18th-century China. Among the old Chinese garden roses, the Old Blush group is the most primitive, while newer groups are the most diverse.
Have you ever wondered what the colour of a Rose means;
